One question

Studying at the Department of Foreign Languages at Phnom Penh University it is not surprising that Khmer students are often keen to practice their English. Yesterday a guy came up and said, 'Excuse me, can I ask you one question?' I replied in the affirmative so he continued, 'What does it mean: "As a person, I am a disaster?"'

hee hee... one of my friends thought I should have said, "If your life is a disaster you should become a Christian." Hmmm... didn't think of that one. I talked about a disaster meaning something very bad has occured. I said that we don't usually say that a person IS a disaster even if something very bad has happened to them or even if they have done something very bad. He wasn't too sure though because he said, "No. It is in my New Headway language book."(which is like the bible of English textbooks here...) Case closed. He probably asked the next foreigner who walked by for a better description.
